Taming the Chaos ~ Mark That Date

When budgeting bulk purchases, we found ourselves asking, “How long does XYZ last?”

How many 50 pound bags of grain do we go through in six months? How long does our concentrated laundry detergent last? Do we go through one bottle of olive oil a month or two?  I never knew the answers to these deep mysteries of life.  A sharpie marker and painters tape solved the problem!

Such a simple concept; write the date on the container.  The white tub in the picture above keeps a running record of our laundry detergent usage.  When it is empty, I open up a new bag, dump it in, then label accordingly.   I now know that each 5 pound bag lasts 3 months–almost to the day.  I was amazed that our laundry is so consistent.

If you find yourself asking, “How much of this do I go through in a month?”, tame the buying chaos and take a moment to mark containers.
